  • 10 ounces (284 grams) fresh strawberries (divided)
  • 3-4 tablespoons (44-50 grams) granulated sugar
  • zest from 1/2 lemon (optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon (7 milliliters) freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 cups (473 milliliters) cold milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare 6 ounces of strawberries by hulling and chopping them. Mash with a potato masher until crushed. Mix in sugar, lemon zest, and juice if desired.
  2. In a small pot over medium-low heat, combine the strawberry mixture. Simmer while stirring for 2-5 minutes until slightly thickened into syrup.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using. Cool the syrup to room temperature before refrigerating.
  4. Dice the remaining strawberries. In glasses, layer the cooled syrup with diced strawberries and pour in cold milk. Stir well before serving.
