  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 ½ cups mixed frozen vegetables
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 yellow onion
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup flour
  • ¾ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground sage
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter (divided)

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Peel and chop potatoes; shred cheese; measure sour cream and half-and-half.
  2. Cook beef: In a large pot, cook ground beef over medium-high heat until browned. Drain grease and set aside.
  3. Boil potatoes: Add chopped potatoes to pot with salted water. Boil until fork-tender (10-15 minutes). Drain and mash with sour cream and 1 tbsp butter.
  4. Make broth: In the same pot, melt remaining butter; sauté onions for 5 minutes, add garlic for an additional minute. Whisk in flour for 1 minute.
  5. Add liquids: Gradually stir in chicken broth and half-and-half; season with Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, mustard powder, and sage.
  6. Combine: Stir in mashed potatoes until well mixed. Add cooked beef and frozen veggies; heat through for about 5 minutes.
  7. Finish with cheese: Remove from heat, stir in shredded cheese until melted.
