Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add eggs, softened butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes). Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. For the filling, melt butter in a pan over medium heat; add minced garlic and cook for around 2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in chopped herbs and set aside.
  4. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Brush with the garlic herb butter mixture and sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly.
  5. Roll the dough tightly into a log; slice lengthwise down the center and twist both halves together with cut sides facing up.
  6. Place twisted dough in a greased baking pan; cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with an egg wash made from combining one egg with water before baking for about 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Allow cooling in the pan for about 15 minutes before slicing.
